The Black Anthology, Language

The poem about a few wild boys and the fruitful mango tree.
The story about a brother remembering his beloved big sister whilst talking to his daughter.
Not to forget a million words, frozen on the tongue, melting away when you hear the name of your country..
The Black Anthology series is about historical, present and future Black, without the need or prerequisite to explain, justify or create art to suit the perception of Black . The theme is language and it features poems, short stories and illustrations by Black writers and artist from Ethiopia, Ghana, Malawi, Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago, Zanzibar part of Republic of Tanzania, the UK and the USA.
The contributors are Tanatsei Gambura, Mohammed Khelef Ghassani, Peter deGraft-Johnson The Repeat Beat Poet, Nardos Mekuria and Meron Berhanu, Oluwagbemiga Ogboro-Cole, Abdullah Adekola, Thembe Mvula, Brendon Alekseii, Sarah Ushurhe, Freddie Mndolo and Meg Arenberg.
These talented writers and illustrators have taken a mirror to their world and through their polished and individual style, have reflected their culture with such brilliance
The anthology is in English. The languages printed in the anthology are Shona, Kiswahili, Amharic, Nigerian Pidgin English, Arabic and English.
This is a declaration to push the boundaries of literature.
BBC Arts- New Creatives, Fanny Eaton: The
Forgotten Pre-Raphaelite Model
My animation, Fannt Eaton: The Forgotten Pre-Raphaelite Model, is now available to view on both the programme, Get Animated! Introducing BBC Arts and on its own on BBC iplayer.
This has been such a delight to create and to use my research about her! I am happy to see the positive feedback that I have received about this animation and that both an older and younger audience are able to take something away from this.
I have been researching and wanting to bring to light to more people about Fanny Eaton for a few years now as a publication, but my proposals were unsuccessful in gaining any funding to do so and publishers were not interested. Of course, I am happy to utilise my research and see it take an animated form and reach a wider audience, thanks to the BBC & ICA commission. The animation itself was created last year, before the Pre-Raphelite exhibition that the National Portrait Gallery advertised and had that featured some of the works that Eaton featured in(which is why the J.B.Wells piece in my work isn't as tiny because I never knew until I saw it in person).

During my research, I managed to successfully amend the below image of Fanny that the V&A have in their collection, which they misidentified for another Pre-Raphelite model. This had to be amended twice! My next aim is to get this done as a publication and hopefully the animation should make it easier to do so. I feel certain stories like these that are hidden about black and mixed heritage histories should be brought to light and not be restricted to always being told through the white gaze as they always tend to be.

Meet Fanny Eaton Comic
I have been working on a few things surrounding the Pre-Raphaelite model of mixed heritage, Fanny Eaton. This is a short comic that gives a little introduction to her. I did not put in all the facts about her life in this piece, but watch this space, as I will be unveiling more work in relation to her. Myriad First Graphic Novel Competition
Although Persevere did not win the Myriad First Graphic Novel Competition, I was delighted that it was shortlisted and that I was able to briefly discuss it with the judges and audience. I will post a few snippets of pages in progress and will keep you updated with this project!

Laydeez do Comics Prize
After creating the comic short Lavender, I decided to develop it further and have three stories interweave into one narrative. This is titled Persevere and currently a work in progress graphic novel, which I entered into the inaugural Laydeez do Comics Prize. I have only made a few shorts and wasn't sure if I stood a chance against those more experienced in the graphic novel form, but I was delighted to discover that I was shortlisted and attended the Laydeez day festival, where I was part of a panel talk, explaining parts of the process. Fellow shortlisted artist, Emma Burleigh was announced the overall winner of the prize.
Lavender
My four page graphic novel short story Lavender, which was about stillbirth, is now available to view in my portfolio. I have wanted to create a short comic about this subject for a while, because it is one that I have never seen portrayed in with such or format or discussed as much, in comparison to those, who may have had a miscarriage. I wanted to make sure that a delicate and subtle approach was taken into telling a story abut stillbirth, which I showed through my use of the three colours that I added. After my 2014 Jonathan Cape Graphic Short Story Prize entry, Dermis Pearl, which was a subtle introduction to the plight of those in Tanzania, who have albinism, I decided to enter my graphic short story, Lavender. However, my entry failed to make the shortlist again. I do not think that I will enter this contest again, as I feel that my illustrative style is not to their aesthetic, but I am happy with the story that I did create. You can read Lavender here.

The:nublk x Illegal Aliens 'A Seat At The Table'
I was selected as one of the artists, who had their work projected during The:nublk x Illegal Aliens ‘A Seat At The Table’ listening party, held at 198 gallery. The two illustrations, include a new illustration of the character Pearl, from my graphic short novel Dermis Pearl that features inside The Salon of Rejects Anthology.
House of Illustration Christmas Fair
I was selected for this years House of Illustration Fair, when I showcased some new pieces, alongside fellow creative and illustrator Biljana Biki. These pieces will be made available on my site soon. Each artist on the day, were given a wall space to transform and I used the opportunity to do some live drawing with some pens.

Go Set a Watchman
I am one of the ten illustrators that won the chance to have my illustration to be exhibited at Waterstones Picadilly at the midnight launch event of Harper Lee's sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman. The illustration is based on the only line released from the upcoming book.
"Every man’s island, Jean Louise, every man’s watchman, is his conscience.”
The exhibition will be on for two weeks
"I interpreted one's watchman to be a person’s moral compass on what is right and wrong. I wanted to create a silhouette of Scout (Jean Louise) to show this, but creating one that is reminiscent to that of a Rorschach"

Dermis Pearl: Graphic Short Story Prize Entry
I recently entered this years Graphic Short Story Prize, but it was won by children's book illustrator and author Alexis Deacon. My story Dermis Pearl, focused on the subject of albinism in Tanzania and was a subtle introduction to what is happening there All images were drawn on off white paper,using only pencils to try and give detail to my character that has albinism. I have put below an image,which was part of my story and the full graphic short story can be read here.
I have also decided to develop this short story further, so watch this space
Picturehouse cinemas recently held a contest to design a Poster which celebrates the work of Hayo Miyazaki. I came runner up,along with fellow creative Jasmine and had my work printed out and exhibited within the Ritzy picturehouse cinema in London throughout their Miyazaki film season. For my design I chose to go for simplistic silhouette designs with a bit of color to highlight detail within the film. I chose Kiki's delivery service, Whisper of the heart, Laputa,Castle in the sky and My neighbour Totoro. For whisper of the heart the music sheet is the song 'Country Road' and I put the film titles in Japanese.
The Coffee Art Project and Project Waterfall
I exhibited a piece of artwork with some other artists at Brick Lane for the Coffee Art Project. The website for which all the artworks will be auctioned off and the proceeds go to Project Waterfall that helps to provide water aid for people living in Tanzania is now live

Mail Me Art Short and Sweet publication!
I recently, received the Mail Me Art publication that features my illustrated envelope :-) I will be in attendance next week to its private view along with my friend who the sketch was of. All proceeds from the publication go to various charities, so I was honoured to be a part of this. It was interesting to see how an illustrated image, being sent through the postal system without any protection or packaging would turn out once it arrives to its destination. I was just happy that the pencil sketch I did came got to the recipients in one piece,without much wear and tear.
I have recently had a few invites for linkedin,but I have not signed up for it yet at the moment. When I eventually sign up, I will add all those who have sent me an email to join.♥

He-She Issue
I currently have another illustration featured in Cent Magazine's He-She Issue for the article titled, 'The Girl In Pink'.
- Short & Sweet
I was invited to take part in this years Mail Me Art Short & Sweet exhibition, which is organised by Darren Di Lieto of Little Chimp Society. 200 artists from 20 countries were invited to take part and the exhibition, along with the publication of the book, will be available in the summer.

- Comica Opening Night
Yesterday, I attended the opening night of the Comica Festival event held at Foyles, where the winner of the Graphic Short Story Prize was announced, but also a premiere live reading of the Author Ravi Thornton's Book The Tale of Brin & Bent and Minno Marylebone, which was accompanied with a musical score played by the pianist Orthon. The soundtrack to this can be heard here.This was quite an interesting way to listen to a graphic novel and the artwork created by Andy Hixon is quite a site to see. Keep your eyes peeled in the coming months for the online graphic novel short that i am illustrating for Ravi too!

On Saturday I went to vintage Books Fete that took place at the southbank, in which they were celebrating their 21st birthday. Along with the celebrations illustrator Posy Simmonds, whose works include Gemma Bovery and Tamara Drewe was illustrating people during the event. I managed to get one of myself done by Posy, who liked my bag!

Last night was the private view of my exhibition of my drawings in which guests included the ladies of Ballad Of. The exhibition is running till 4th March!
So i am having an exhibition of some of my drawings with the private view on the 21st February in Platform 271 (6:30-9:30pm) .
